Vibration Control

Vibration can affect people's health and comfort within buildings but also, crucially, its structural and cosmetic integrity. Vibration sources may affect sensitive equipment (i.e. imaging equipment or projectors) and sources like transportation or machines requiring assessment where receptors will be affected.

The effects of vibration on people is hugely varied, ranging from a thrill (when part of a planned experience) to fear inducing when the source is unknown. The impact on human comfort within buildings can be assessed against British Standard 6472 and on the structural integrity for damage in accordance with British Standard 7385 within buildings. Fortunately, buildings seldom suffer damage due to vibration, unlike in earthquake zones, as the levels needed to cause even cosmetic damage, are higher than the levels that cause occupants real concern for their safety. Therefore, human comfort provides the focus for much of our work.

We conduct surveys in an accordance with relevant standards, for environmental, building and construction activities. We do also work with structural engineers to quantify the vibrational response of the buildings to help diagnose structural issues, and conversely to design solutions to protect sensitive equipment.

Finally health and safely assessments at high levels of vibration exposure of people, affects workers using percussive and rotating tools. We can carry out assessments in the work place to guard against the permanent disability known as vibration white finger.
